Peter Marsh Chase
Saturday 23rd January saw the thirtieth year of the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock Park. After all the tremendously cold weather and snow the racing industry was relieved to welcome a high quality card.
The winner was the 12 year old Our Vic trained by David Pipe. Starting at 20/1 Our Vic was one of the outsiders but was eminently backable as he has been one of the top three mile chasers in the country for around five years. Phil Smith, the senior BHB handicapper, had finally dropped him a few pounds which obviously helped!
The winner was ridden by the claiming jockey Danny Cook who is good value for his 3lb allowance. This was Danny's first winner at Haydock but certainly won't be his last. For most of the season he has been the Pipes' amateur rider. When he realised that he had no chance of catching Oliver Greenall in the Amateur Riders' Championship he turned professional.
